Closing your credit card account is often times a drawn out ordeal. You have to wait on hold once you call. Then you have to talk to the first line of defense that will try and talk you out of closing your card. Then they’ll transfer you to retentions where you’ll have to hold between connections. The retentions person is usually delivers a high pressure pitch for you to stay. After you’ve explained several times why you want to close the account they will finally close it.
But, there’s an easier way. Log on to your Citi online account and click the “Secure Message” link at the top of the page as shown above circled in blue.
Next select the account you want to close from the drop down menu (Step #2). Then click the “send a new message” button at the bottom right (Step #3). Click the image for a larger view.
Fill out the form that appears at the bottom and submit the message. This is what I wrote: “Hello. I’d like this account closed because I no longer use it. Amex – 5155. Thanks, Ken” That’s it! Less than 30 minutes later I received a reply that they had closed the account. Easy as pie!
